Then you hit the Main Menu, and suddenly you’re staring at a cluttered mess while a shitty reggae loop plays. That’s, for the tropical Island I guess… Going from samurai rock to beach-bar reggae in seconds is… interesting but jarring.
But then, the game actually starts! Silence… no music… nothing. Just cheap, harsh sound effects that feel ripped straight from a shareware CD circa of 1969. It’s honestly painful.
Gameplay is easy enough: shoot, dodge, use power-ups, you get the gist of it in a few clicks. But the frustration comes from the fact that nothing is ever explained. Hours later, I finally discovered that all the “tutorial” info is hidden away in the main menu under INFO.
OK! Maybe (probably) I’m dumb, but let’s be real: most players will dive straight into gameplay, not dig through menus, especially on a rail-shooter game. Tutorials should be part of the game, not three static pages of text. Still, credit where it’s due: at least there is something there to help you understand… eventually.
Visually, you get a thrift shop of mismatched assets, harsh models crash into each other on screen.
It’s not challenging in a good way; it’s just nasty to look at. And trust me, it happens that I stare at myself in the mirror sometimes, but this… manages to be uglier.
Daunting experience, I know.
I eventually reached 2nd Dan Black Belt, which sounds cool on paper (and you get an achievement for it), but it really feels hollow and kind of pointless to keep chasing high scores. There just isn’t enough to make you want to come back.
And yet… I kept playing for a bit. Because buried under the mess, there is a loop of dodging and shooting that could be fun. Those glimpses of Kamoku’s story keep you hoping that the next level might finally pull it together.
But Spoilers! There is no “next level” … just the same one, endlessly panning sideways.
Positives
💚 Devs are active and enthusiastic in the forums (seriously, respect for that).
💚 Some interesting story fragments and world-building… if you squint hard.
💚 Nostalgia for the arcade/rail shooters genre.
Negatives
❌ One level. Endlessly panning sideways.
❌ Enemies and power-ups? Copy-paste, repeat.
❌ Music vanishes after the menu. Sound effects are cheap and jarring.
❌ Visual clutter, zero aesthetic coherence.
❌ “Tutorial” is meh
