Sword of the Sea Makes Exploration Feel Like Surfing Through a Dream

Sword of the Sea offers a rare blend of flow and wonder. Set on shifting sands, it puts you in the role of a “Wraith,” surfing across dunes with a hoversword that skates, surfs, and soars. Your mission is clear: restore a lost ocean, one wave at a time.

The game comes from Giant Squid (the team behind Abzû and The Pathless), and features art by Journey’s Matt Nava paired with a soothing score from Austin Wintory. No dialogue is needed; visuals and music tell the story as you explore.

The world seems to have the same beautiful aesthetic we’ve grown to love with Abzû and The Pathless (and of course Journey).

Gameplay focuses on momentum and tricks. You can grind along ancient ruins, catch massive air, and carve through sandy waves. It reminds you of Tony Hawk meets a desert dreamscape. Beyond the flow, you’ll collect Ocean Seeds to bring water and life back to the land. Expect a few tense moments too, including boss battles with colossal leviathans.

The world itself shifts around you. One moment you’re crossing dunes, the next you’re grinding over submerged ruins. It’s a living canvas that responds to your movement.

The game officially launches August 19, 2025, on PC (Steam) and PlayStation 5, with early access included in the PlayStation Plus catalog. It’s an experiment in motion and atmosphere, a mix of exploration and meditation set to surf. And to be honest I’m looking forward to play my Tony Hawk’s game in a Journey-like world!
