Possessor(s) Revealed: Demonish Metroidvania Powered by Heart Machine and Devolver

Possessor(s) is Heart Machine’s latest dive into vibrant, emotional action. Revealed during the Day of the Devs showcase at SGF, the game dropped a demo June 6 via Steam Next Fest. It’s a striking Metroidvania with demon possession, visceral combat, and stylish visuals.

You play as Luca, a young survivor who loses her legs in a city-wide catastrophe. Forced into a deal with Rehm (an arrogant demon), you gain new limbs and razor-sharp abilities. Combat is tight and fast. You can juggle enemies, parry shots, and wield demon-augmented weapons. It feels like a cross between Hyper Light Drifter’s precision and Prince of Persia combat finesse.

The game looks stylish as expected with a game backed by Devolver Digital, and the world seems intriguing!

You explore a flooded, shattered cityscape owned by a ruthless megacorp. Skyscrapers collapse into water, neon signage flickers, and hidden lore bleeds through abandoned places. It’s moody, atmospheric, and feels emotionally heavy.

The demo has landed with mostly positive reviews on Steam, about 71% approval so far. Previewers praised its gameplay smoothness, combat variety, and emotional punch. Many highlight the banter between Luca and Rehm as a rare breakthrough: its self-aware, sarcastic tone keeps things grounded while horror looms.

Story matters here. You’re not just fighting monsters or climbing platforms. This is a game about trauma, forgiveness, and finding strength in a broken world. Every demon you defeat and banter exchanged leaves a mark.

Possessor(s) is coming in late 2025 on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S. You can play the demo now on Steam. If it nails its ambitions, this might be the most emotionally charged Metroidvania of the year.
