Do you want to dive underground like a mole, whip monsters like a Belmont, and do it all in the style of a Game Boy Color game? We do! Mina the Hollower is bringing that exact energy, and it’s arriving this Halloween.
Revealed again at Summer Game Fest with a new trailer, Mina the Hollower is a gothic action-adventure from the creators of Shovel Knight. You play as Mina, a whip-wielding inventor battling through cursed islands full of undead horrors, haunted graveyards, and secret tunnels.
The game plays from a top-down perspective and takes clear inspiration from old-school Zelda and Castlevania. But it adds something fresh: Mina can burrow underground to dodge attacks, pop out behind enemies, or uncover hidden paths. It’s quick, tactical, and makes even small fights feel dynamic.

Visually, it nails the Game Boy Color look, but with smoother animations, detailed pixel art, and a soundtrack that goes way harder than you’d expect from 8-bit beeps. It feels retro, but not held back by nostalgia.
Best of all, there’s a free Steam demo live right now, and your progress will carry over to the full game. That means you can jump in today, test out the combat, and be ready for launch.
Shovel Knight fans have been waiting on this one since its Kickstarter, and now it’s finally locked in: Mina the Hollower launches on October 31, 2025 for PC via Steam. No console news yet, but the devs say more platforms may be revealed later.
If you miss the feel of old handheld games but want something tighter, meaner, and built for now—this one’s worth digging into.
