Letters of War Is a Spiritual Successor to Valiant Hearts Based on a Real Family Story

Letters of War is a game built on love and history. It tells the story of Liam, a British carpenter who leaves home to fight in World War II, and his daughter Rosie, who stays behind reading his letters as her anchor in uncertain times.

The game splits its focus between Liam’s trials on battlefields like Normandy and Monte Cassino and Rosie’s small domestic moments as she waits for her father’s safe return.

I really love the premise of the game, and I’m always looking for a good heartfelt story so this seems right up my alley.

Developed by Wood Cabin Games, the title draws its emotional impact from a real family story. The developer’s grandmother, now 88, inspired the project as a way to preserve her father’s memory. And that sense of personal legacy seems to show through every scene.

The gameplay is a 2D narrative adventure that evokes Valiant Hearts with its cartoon-style visuals and emotional weight. But Letters of War charts its own path, mixing gentle puzzles, like cooking or rhythm tasks, with touching cinematics that jump between front and home front. You’ll drive a tank, dodge falling shells, or build a fire for Rosie. Every moment feels lived in.

The fact that we can both see the point of view of the father and the little girl makes it a great way to go back to these a time period on the lens of an ordinary family.

It’s set to release on Steam August 14, launching in English and Russian with more language support planned after. And early reactions in preview trailers praise its heartfelt storytelling and grounded tone. Letters of War is a letter from the past… but its message feels very real today, maybe more than it ever did since WWII.
