Into the Unwell Mixes Cartoon Chaos and Body Horror in This New Co-Op Roguelite

Into the Unwell isn’t your average cartoon roguelite. It takes cheerful rubber-hose animation from the 1930s and mutates it with body horror and chaotic action. Revealed at Summer Game Fest, the game is set to enter Early Access on Steam, with closed beta sign-ups already live.

Developed by indie team She Was Such A Good Horse, Into the Unwell is being published by Coffee Stain, the studio behind Valheim and Deep Rock Galactic. They’re bringing serious support to this trip-wild indie.

There is something really tragic and almost relatable for something so “experimental”!

You and up to two friends drop into a twisted cartoon world as a cast of misfit characters. Combat is mad and fast. That “whack ’n slash” description is on point! Expect punchy platforming, bold attacks, weird weapons, and Talent Stars to boost your capabilities. Each run feels unique, with fresh quirks mixing humor and terror.

The art style is uncanny. Clean lines, stretchy limbs, surreal colors, but then it turns gross. Blood spatters, body parts, and moments that stop you mid-cheer. It’s a fever-dream contrast that sticks.

Looks like it’s going to be a hectic good time with friends!

Coffee Stain says the game is coming to Steam Early Access soon. For now, a closed beta is available for PC players. The hope is to shape the game with community feedback before full release.

If you’re into roguelites that lean hard into personality, Into the Unwell might just be the weirdest, most unforgettable one yet.

This game really stood out during the Summer Game Fest for me, I love the art style rubberhose animation adds a level of grit that I really enjoy. Definitely one I am excited to play!
